Sacramento, CA - Oct. 7, 2007
Four people died, including a toddler and an infant, when a pickup towing a trailer lost control on Interstate 80 Sunday morning and was broadsided by another truck, California Highway Patrol officials said.
The crash happened around 6:45 a.m. Sunday on Interstate 80 along the Bryte Bend Bridge over the Sacramento River between Yolo and Sacramento counties, CHP spokeswoman Officer Lizz Dutton said.
Dutton said the four were traveling eastbound on 80 towing a trailer carrying a Corvette when the driver lost control of the 2006 Nissan Frontier and hit the guard rail.
The trailer and Corvette detached and the driver of an oncoming box truck was unable to get out of the way, slamming into the pickup broadside, Dutton said.
The driver, identified as a 22-year-old man from Clinton, Utah, was pronounced dead at the scene as was a 22-year-old female passenger. The infant and toddler were transported to the UC Davis Medical Center, where they died a short time later.
The driver of the box truck, Jarber Chavarria, 33, of Vallejo and a passenger were not injured.
Eastbound lanes of Interstate 80 were shut down for nearly five hours by the crash. The lanes were reopened around 11:45 a.m.
